Interview with Karine, Mother, Business Woman and Yoga Teacher!
by | 24 April 2019

I’m always curious about why people decide to live in a specific region more than in another. What brings and influences them to make this important decision? Why does this region seems to be, for them, the best place to raise a family?

I asked Karine these questions. A mother of two little girls, Karine is a young business woman and yoga teacher who lives in Brome-Missiquoi! Here’s an account of our meeting, as she explains why she and her husband chose Brome-Missisquoi to raise their little family.

Tell me a little bit about your family

My husband and I have two daughters, one is 3 years old and the youngest is a year old. They go to a family-based daycare service where they are simply blossoming.

I have a coaching enterprise in branding for business women.  I work from home since everything is done online. I also give prenatal and postnatal yoga classes. I make my own work schedule, which allows me to spend more time with my girls. This was very important for us after our second child was born.

Gerik, my husband, works in landscaping with a young, very dynamic team. We live in an old swiss cottage with our 7-year-old labrador and our laying hens that share the yard with a vegetable garden and Gerik’s permaculture projects.

Why did you choose to settle in Brome-Missisquoi?

Gerik is from Vermont and I’m from Montreal.  After living a couple of years with him in Burlington and because we were planning to have a family in the near future, we wanted to move to Quebec; however, we definitely didn’t want to move to the city.

We wanted to live within close range of the border to make it easier for us to travel from one country to the other and we were looking for a region where Gerik, who didn’t speak French at the time, could integrate more easily. The Eastern Townships was our best option. What I discovered here, in Brome Missisquoi, was the same charming environment that had attracted me to Vermont. My parents had a cottage in Sutton, where I spent a lot of time during my teenage years. Some of my dearest friendships were made here, so, in a way, my heart still belonged to the region.

It was the opportunity to work for BALNEA Spa that made us decide to finally move to Bromont. The fact that Bromont is located near many other municipalities where English-speaking communities also reside weighed in the balance.

What are the advantages of raising a family in a rural area, in your opinion?

We feel so safe here! We live at the end of a street, in a rather isolated sector, but with great neighbours. The many qualities of the citizens in the region are quite extraordinary. We chose to surround ourselves with people who have a heart and a conscience, and we can give you many examples of this. People here are open-minded, value the environment and have a great respect for the earth which really connects with our own values. We couldn’t have hoped for more!
